How to Earn a Merit Badge
The Merit Badge program is part of the Boy Scouts of America Advancement Program. These are the steps to take to earn a Merit Badge, [as outlined in the Boy Scout Handbook.]
1. Get a Merit Badge Pamphlet on your subject of interest. You may borrow one from the Troop Librarian or purchase one from the Council Store.
2. Get a signed Merit Badge Card from the Scoutmaster or Advancements Chair and decide on a Merit Badge Counselor from the approved list.
3. Contact the Merit Badge Counselor and explains that you would like to earn the badge. Discuss with the Counselor how you can get the most out of the time you will spends working on the badge and set a time table for completion..4. Learn and do the requirements that the pamphlet requires. Go as far as you can to fulfill the requirements on your own.
5. When you are finished with the requirements, make another appointment with the counselor. With your buddy (another Scout, a parent or guardian, a brother or sister, or a relative or friend) meet with your Merit Badge Counselor. The counselor will go over the requirements with you. You may have notes and other information on hand. If the counselor is satisfied that you have satisfactorily completed the requirements, he will sign your Merit Badge Card. If not, the counselor will explain what you must do to complete it. (A Merit Badge Clinic, which is held several times a year, is a great place to go to get signed off on a Merit Badge.)
6. Give the signed Card to the Advancements Chair, Mrs. Delucca. She will get the badge for you and present it during a Troop Ceremony.
